I was waymarking a few other locations and came across this very historic-looking mural located on the south side of a local business. This part of Dorris is the heart of town and the city hall is located across the street, along with a very tall veterans flagpole which claims to be the tallest flagpole in America west of the Mississippi.
After closer inspection, it was obvious that this mural was painted with conventional paints and represents a snapshot back in time of Dorris in its much younger and prosperous days. There is a painted sign on the mural that reads 'Hotel Dorris' and an opera house next door to the hotel that both appear to be in the same location where this mural and building lie today. I was able to find a couple of historical pictures from the Butte Valley Chamber of Commerce website that depict Main St in Dorris in the early 1900s (and the scene from which this mural was painted from) and in 1940 (I've uploaded both). If one passes through Dorris today, it is a shadow of its former self. This community has seen better days and many of the buildings that once existed are now gone and some buildings remain empty. Dorris was a lumber town and when the logging went away, so did the population. Today, Dorris is home to about 1000 residents.
