The fantastic Post Rock castle next to the Glen Elder City park was a service station worthy of Route 66 well off that historic road in Kansas. It was added to the US National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

In 1926 E. W. Norris commissioned a castle made of local Post Rock limestone to be a service station along the US 24, then known as Federal Highway 40. Once US 24 was re-routed around town, this structure was bypassed by most traffic.

This wonderful building has been rescued and repurposed as the centerpiece of the Castle Rock Lodge. Glen Elder is the center of a very vibrant hunting and fishing economy in these counties.

The historic 1930 photo credit belongs to the National Park Service.
