Barbour County

Formed from Harrison,Lewis and Randolph in 1843. It is named for Philip Pendleton Barbour, distinguished Virginia jurist. The scene of opening hostilities on land between the armies of the North and the South in 1861.



Upshur County

Formed in 1851 from Lewis, Barbour and Randolph and named for Abel Parker Upshur, the great Virginia statesman. Samuel and John Pringle, the first settlers, came in 1764. The Pringle brothers later guided other pioneers here.
