Grand Forks history is closely tied to the mining and railroad boom of the 1890's and early 1900's. The post office opened in 1896. The original post office was replaced in 1913 with this new modern brick building. The copper-clad clock tower was added a year later, in 1914.

The clock has four faces, each about 6 feet in diameter, with Roman Numeral numbers, and is surmounted with a copper-clad dome. The walls of the clock tower are also copper-clad. 99 years of weather have certainly given it a patina!

Today this building is the City Hall, having undergone extensive interior renovation and exterior restoration in 1985. It sits on the southwest corner of the intersection of 4th Street and Market Avenue.
