The 6th Duke of Cavendish collected many plants and trees culminating in this great Pinetum in the gardens of Chatsworth. During the 1820s this was one of the first pinetums. Included are giant redwood, monkey puzzle, hemlock spruce, Douglas Fir and Japanese white pine. There are over 100 species of trees including a rare Hinoki cypress.

It was Paxton, the world renowned garden landscaper, who brought back seeds from across the world. He was able to uproot, transport and re-plant fully grown trees expertly.

During the seed-hunting trips two of Chatsworth's gardeners, Robert Wallace and Peter Banks, drowned after crossing the Rockies.
