This facility was built on Minnesota Point, a sandy spit between Duluth, MN and Superior, WI in 1904. It was originally constructed for the purpose of building docks, creating breakwaters, and dredging channels on the western shoreline of Lake Superior and providing the best service possible for cargo ships. Today they continue to help keep the harbor open for the iron ore vessels that carry taconite from the Vermilion and Mesabi Iron Ranges through the Great Lakes to eastern ports. There are two piers for mooring tugs and vessels that repair Great Lakes navigational structures.
