The Murals of Conejos County Driving Tour) displays the old town of Conejos and related landmarks. On the left (looking southwest) stands Our Lady of Guadalupe and the old courthouse, both of which burned down (in 1926 and 1980 respectively). A second panel (looking northwest) shows the Major Lafayette Head house. Head fortified the nearby settlement of Guadalupe against Indian attacks and later served as the first Lieutenant Governor of the State of Colorado (1876-79). In the foreground of the mural, a rabbit watches from the bushes. The rabbit is the symbol of Conejos County.
The mural was created by Fred "Lightning Heart" Haberlein and measures 2 ft x 12 ft. It is one of many murals in the area that comprise the Murals of Conejos County Driving Tour, highlighting art that engages in the "ages-old local tradition of story-telling depicting tales of settlement, folklore, faith, scenic beauty and everyday rural life."
