The "Achtziger" (German for "Eighties") were the soldiers of the III. Battalion Fusilier Regiment "von Gersdorff" (Kurhessisches) No. 80, stationed in the city 1871-1918, an infantry unit of the Prussian Army. They also were a military and patriotic part at official events, such as the arrivals of the imperial family in Homburg or the unveiling of monuments.
This monument was erected in memory of the fallen of the "Achtziger" in the World War 1914-1918. It was designed by the Frankfurt architect Schmalz, and was unveiled on August 22, 1926. The life sited figurative presentation shows a lion, rearing up in agony but defending the battered flag. The about 2 meters high base made of blocks of marble shows on the front, under the regimental coat of arms and a ring holder, the inscription:

"DEN GEFALLENEN ZUR EHRUNG / DEN LEBENDEN ZUR MAHNUNG"
(To remember the fallen / The living as a reminder)
