Iona had several town sites in proximity to each other as land was donated. The town sat along SD Hwy 47 in Lyman County just north of the Gregory County line. When Fort Randall Dam was closed and Lake Francis Case flooded, SD Hwy 47 was obliged to bend around to the west to miss the flooded areas north of Iona.
In years gone by, Iona was the last stop for supplies and live bait for those going fishing and boating on the river.
Cattlemen, cattle rustlers, farmers, merchants, and newspapermen were first on the scene in many of these old pioneer towns.
