Salt Lake to Southern California Road - Peteetneet

"...a considerable Portion of the land between the Spanish Fork & F.P. [Fort Peteetneet] is low & marshy
& Bad to cross especially with heavy loaded waggons ... some of the waggons required 9 yokes of oxen

Road of Trail Name: Salt Lake to Southern California Road

Historical Significance:
This wagon road was a branch of the California Trail that left the main trail in Salt Lake City and travelled south to join up with the Old Spansih Trail. This route eventually became known as the "California Road".

Years in use: 30

How you discovered it:
While photographing waymarks in Payson's Memorial Park I spotted this distinctive marker of the type commonly erected by the Oregon/California Trail Association.

Why?:
This became a well-used trade route from Salt Lake City to the Mormon settlements of southwestern Utah and beyond through what is now Las Vegas and then to the Los Angeles area.

Directions:
This marker is near the northwest of Memorial Park at 205 S Main Street in Payson, Utah.
