EN: The origin of the castle Fürstenstein is not known, it is believed, however, that it was founded by the lords of Rotberg. 1302 it was first mentioned. Shortly thereafter, it was besieged by Habsburg. In a feud of Catherine of Burgundy with Heinrich zu Rhein and Rudolf von Neuenstein the fort was attacked and occupied by Heinrich and Rudolf in 1412. Basel, in alliance with Catherine, destroyed it and had executed the whole occupation. 1515 the ruin was sold to Solothurn as the other Rotberg possessions.

The ruin is located on a steep ridge south of Ettingen. Today only a few parts of the castle wall remain, allowing hardly any conclusions about the original size and shape. The main part was probably on the eastern part of the ridge. South of the rocks below the cliff there were possibly some outbuildings. The way to the ruin is not well developed, it can only be reached by climbing.

DE: Der Ursprung der Burg Fürstenstein ist nicht bekannt, man nimmt aber an, dass sie von den Herren von Rotberg gegründet wurde. 1302 wurde sie erstmals erwähnt. Kurz darauf wurde sie von Habsburg belagert. In einer Fehde zwischen Katharina von Burgund mit Heinrich zu Rhein und Rudolf von Neuenstein wurde die Festung 1412 von Heinrich und Rudolf überfallen und besetzt. Das mit Katharina verbündete Basel zerstörte sie darauf und liess die ganze Besatzung hinrichten. 1515 wurde die Ruine wie die anderen Rotberger Besitzungen an Solothurn verkauft.

Die Ruine befindet sich auf einem schroffen Felsgrat südlich von Ettingen. Von der Burg sind heute nur noch wenige Mauerreste erhalten, die kaum Rückschlüsse auf die ursprüngliche Grösse und Form zulassen. Der Hauptteil stand wohl auf dem östlichen Teil des Grats. Südlich des Felsen waren möglicherweise noch Nebengebäude unterhalb des Felsens. Die Ruine ist nicht gut erschlossen und nur durch Klettern zu erreichen.
