The trailhead is the parking area and mountain hut of Refugio El Pilar. Until the small city of Fuencaliente at the south of the island the distance is about 16.4 km. There are many volcanoes in between, it needs hiking experience to finish this trail in one day, if you want to catch the last bus in Fuencaliente station. Most hikers come by taxi to the trailhead and take the bus late afternoon back from Fuencaliente. Even in summer the wheather can be tricky, because the region is well known for its fog.
The trail is marked in white-red and with wooden distance and direction markers. During summer you can't go wrong, because the trail is crowded with hikers, bikers and trail runners.
The Ruta de los Volcanes is part of the long distance hiking trail GR (Gran Recorrido) number 131 in direction of Los Canarios. The volcanic trail is the third part of it: RUTA DE LOS VOLCANES - 3º ETAPA DEL GR 131.
Starting 2008 the GR 131 is part of the European long distance path E7 from Spain to Hungary.
