Double Helix is one of several major public art works by Richard Harrell Rogers. The Double Helix was created in 1981 to commemorate the growth of the South Texas Medical Center and was sponsored by the San Antonio Medical Foundation. There is a large bronze plaque in front of the sculpture that tells of the origin of the South Texas Medical Center, this Double Helix, and lists the 96 names of those who donated at least $5,000 toward the purchase of the 620 acres forming the campus of the South Texas Medical Center. The text prior to the long lists of names reads as follows:

This sculpture is in appreciation of those individuals, corporations, and foundations listed below who contributed $5,000 or more to t6he acquisition of the surrounding 620 acres of land. This work was commissioned by the San Antonio Medical Foundation as a reminder of their vision and dedication in creating the South Texas Medical Center. The institutions, present and future, providing treatment, education, and research, represent the original donors’ respect for life and their desire to foster the health of mankind.
(followed by 96 names listed in three columns)

The abstract sculpture is kabout 24 ft high by 12 ft wide and is made of large aluminum pipes fitted together such that the viewer will see it as different shapes when viewed from different angles. One view causes the sculpture to look like two rectangles; another view sees two triangles side-by-side; and a third view sees two triangles stacked one on top of the other.
The sculptor, Richard Harrell Rogers (1941-2012) has this sculpture and several other of his major abstracts on displays around San Antonio, TX. Other works by Mr. Rogers are in Corpus Christi, Dallas, and Houston. Sculpture similar in design and material as this Double Helix is The Colonnade (see WMD2NV and WMBZCK) at 9834 Colonnade Blvd in San Antonio. Also close by this Double Helix is another smaller work by Rodgers at 8647 Wurzbach Rd. titled, Centered Disc.
