This is the building that housed Charles Walter's blacksmith shop, in the area formerly known as Glencoe, (now North Plains). The shop was open 72 years, from 1890 thru 1962, when Charles closed up shop due to failing eyesight, at age 92. He was shoeing horses right up until the day he closed the shop up. Charles was said to be able to fabricate or build most anything that the agricultural community needed: farm implementss, buggy part, shears, spindles, etc.
The building still houses Charles Walter's blacksmith and farrier tools, including parts for shaping, forging and building metal items, heavy hand tools, and other types of items used in the trade before the days of electricity and hydraulics.
During the 100-year-annivery of North Plains, in September 2010, the blacksmith building was open for visitors to view. On the outside are various metal and paper signs, all telling a story, and inside, there is evidence that many, many posters and signs have been tacked to the walls, no doubt this was a hub of the community at one time.
