1878: The U.S. territory of New Mexico is linked to the rest of the nation by railroad for the first time, as the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway inaugurates a newly completed line through the Raton Pass.
1888: Casey at the Bat is published.
1898: The United States invasion of Puerto Rico begins with a landing at Guánica Bay.
1908: Henry Ford produces his first Model T automobile.
1918: Suspects in the Chicago Restaurant Poisonings are arrested, and more than 100 waiters are taken into custody, for poisoning restaurant customers with a lethal powder called Mickey Finn.
1928: Mickey Mouse appears in Steamboat Willie, the third Mickey Mouse cartoon released, but the first sound film and the first such film to be generally distributed.
1938: A nylon bristle toothbrush becomes the first commercial product to be made with nylon yarn.
1948: The stock car racing series Nascar is founded by Bill France Sr. and William France, Sr.
1958: Nikita Khrushchev becomes Premier of the Soviet Union.
1968: My Lai massacre: American troops kill scores of civilians. The story will first become public in November 1969 and will help undermine public support for the U.S. efforts in Vietnam.
1978: Hollywood film director Roman Polanski skips bail and flees to France, after pleading guilty to charges of engaging in sex with a 13-year-old girl.
