On the southeast corner, in a niche approached by curving steps, is the BRONZE BUST OF J. MARION SIMS, by Edmond Quin. Doctor Sims, one of the State's great physicians, is known as the 'Father of Gynecology.' - South Carolina: A Guide to the Palmetto State, Columbia section , pgs. 223-224
The guide is discussing various items found on the Statehouse grounds in Columbia. Since the Guide was written the bust of J. Marion Sims has been moved to the north west corner of the grounds. The bust is sitting on a pedestal with the following inscription:
