Ram raiding of antiques shops is becoming a problem. Lovejoy falls foul of one such ram raid when he puts a Sheraton bureau in an antique dealer’s window and the shop is raided, leaving the Sheraton smashed.

Meanwhile Lady Jane is fund raising for the baby unit at the local hospital. The fund raising is led by Edwin Felt, a local hotelier. Both Charlie Gimbert and Lovejoy get involved with the hospital. Charlie Gimbert gets involved as a way of getting a photo of Lady Jane’s grandfather clock. Gimbert has a Belgian client, Monsieur Forget, who is interested in it. Lovejoy, on the other hand becomes a hospital visitor in case someone has to go into a home and he can value the antiques. This backfires when he is valuing an antique fire arm in a ladies house and her son calls the police firearms squad.

Whilst Lady Jane is fund raising on the streets of Thaxted, a thug snatches her bag. A passer by, Danny, gets her handbag back and Lady Jane employs him to clean windows. The same night thieves break in to Felsham Hall, but are disturbed by Lady Jane. They leave a photo behind. Obviously antiques are being stolen to order. Lovejoy knows about Gimbert’s photographing of the clock and persuades him to tell him of Forget. When they arrive at the hotel, Forget has already left.

Lovejoy has his truck stolen, but catches a glimpse of it at the hospital fund raising do. He chases off to Felsham Hall and foils a ram raid taking place by Danny in Lovejoy’s truck. Danny takes Lovejoy, Tinker, Eric and Lady Jane to the docks where they find Edwin Felt and Forget loading a barge. Forget gets away in the barge, but Felt is caught by Lovejoy. Lovejoy extracts valuable furniture from Felt’s hotel as recompence.
