After having his stock impounded by the bailiffs, Lovejoy is short of funds. Lady Jane offers him a loan, but he refuses. At a company bankruptcy sale Lovejoy sees a set of twenty paintings for sale for £6000. He hasn’t got the cash, but manages to con a new antique dealer out of £6000 by selling him a roman jar, that was actually a mustard pot.
Armed with the cash, Lovejoy buys the paintings and puts one painting in for auction. He then contacts Henry the coffin follower, Gideon, and the Matron, old friends of his. They used to operate a ring in the old days. Lovejoy wants them to operate a ring for him. Not to drive the price down, as in days of yore, but to drive the price up to £2500. The idea is to get a high valuation on one painting so that Lovejoy can sell the other 19 paintings at a high price.
All does not go to plan. Henry spots a funeral outside the auction house and follows it. One man down Lovejoy enlists Lady Jane to bid on his behalf. The ring works and the painting sells outside the ring for £2600. The painting is sold to the grand daughter of the artist.
Lovejoy has to pay the ring and has to give the irate antique dealer his £6000 back, but does clear £12,000. Unfortunately, Lady Jane isn’t speaking to him. She found out about the ring, and is far from pleased
