Lovejoy is mixing in sophisticated circles and ignoring his friends. He appears on a TV show and amazes the audience with his “divi” talent. Shortly afterwards things start to seriously unravel.

Lovejoy is asked by Tara Brockley to do an evaluation of some house contents. She and her husband have inherited the contents, but are now estranged. She wants Lovejoy to prevent her being swindled by her ex husband. On the appointed day Jack Brockley turns up with Charlie Gimbert in tow, for the same reasons. Charlie and Lovejoy agree to act in collusion over the antiques and share the commission. All goes well until coffin chaser Ted Goat turns up. Everyone gives Goat short shrift, however Goat later catches up with Lovejoy at the White Hart. Goat tells Lovejoy that he knows that there was a Chippendale wine cooler in the house and wants to know what Lovejoy has done with it. Failing to get a deal from Lovejoy, Goat says he will act for the Brockleys.

The Brockleys, with Ted Goat, and Charlie Gimbert confront Lovejoy. Lovejoy is nystified as to how he missed the wine cooler. Maybe he is losing his “Divi” powers. He seeks out ex “Divi” Harold Richards. Richards advises him to stop concentrating on money and get the love of antiques back into his life. He also allows Lovejoy to catch up on his sleep.

Lovejoy finds the man who cleared the non antique furniture and finds that he passed the wine cooler on to Spike Hawkins. Hawkins is from Wales, but will be attending a local antiques fair. Lovejoy goes off to the fair, with the Brockleys and Gimbert in pursuit. Lovejoy manages to retrieve the wine cooler and return it to the Brockleys, restoring his reputation.
