Lovejoy is contacted by his ex-wife at an auction. Apparently their daughter, Vicky, has disappeared. Lovejoy investigates and finds out that his daughter has moved in with an older man, David Herbert. Further investigations reveal that David Herbert is not the widower he claims, his wife being very much alive, and living in Cap Ferat.

Meanwhile, Lovejoy has to locate a painting for Lady Jane’s Uncle Willie’s birthday. He gets the idea of swapping a painting for the one Lady Jane wants. This leads him to realise that the painting he wants to swap, belonging to his friend Bonnie, is a fake. This is upsetting since Lovejoy vouched for the painting. The painting Lovejoy originally saw was genuine, the one Bonnie now has is a copy. Lovejoy decides to go back to the gallery where the paining was sold from. Unfortunately the gallery has moved.

Lovejoy asks the estate agents about who rented the gallery, but has no luck. Eric is despatched to date the estate agent’s secretary. Eric arranges a date and gets the name of the gallery owner. The gallery owner, Jez Brightman, still has a gallery in Great Bardfield. Lady Jane and Lovejoy pay it a visit. Lovejoy notices that there is a mixture of fake and real paintings in the gallery. He gets even more suspicious when he notices that there is a picture restorer working behind the gallery. He figures that the restorer is knocking out the copies.

A newspaper article that Lovejoy finds shows Bonnie’s original painting in the home of Michael Brightman, Jez’s father. Obviously the original paintings go from Michael Brightman’s home to the restorer. The restorer makes a copy and Jez displays the original. When a buyer makes a purchase they get a fake, and the restored picture goes back to Michael Brightman. Lovejoy tackles Michael Brightman, and Brightman buys back Bonnie’s fake. Jez and his restorer friend are put out of business.

Lovejoy’s daughter is dumped by David Herbert, before Lovejoy has time to intervene. Lovejoy later sees Herbert with a younger woman. Herbert explains to Lovejoy that his affair with Vicky was a moment of madness, which he now regrets. The young woman, of Vicky’s age, on his arm at the moment is his daughter.
