Christian Shotley has to find £30,000 in death duties. Lovejoy values the family furniture, only to find it has been made by his Uncle Wilfred. Some hope remains after ‘Beau’ Derrick Whittaker finds an old flag whilst doing restoration work at the local church. The old flag dates back to the American revolution. The Shotley’s ancestors fought in that war and it is believed they have title to the flag. An American general has different ideas and claims the flag belonged to his ancestors. The Shotleys employ an eccentric lawyer, Harvey Q Swainston to argue their case.
Before Mr Swainston can finish his argument with the General’s lawyer, the local vicar steps in and claims the flag as belonging to the church, according to the bill of sale between the Shotleys and the church commissioners. All is not lost however, as Lovejoy discovers that Wilfred has a very valuable set of lead soldiers. Lovejoy auctions the soldiers off to raise the necessary death duties.
