Edward Dalton was the son of Absalom and Amelia Dalton (Absolom was born in Anshy-Warwickshire in 1774 and was a hotel proprietor, plumber and glazier by trade). Edwin was schooled in Coventy, learned the trades of his father during a 7-year apprenticeship, then moved to Austraila to practice his trade. In 1851 Edwin moved to Portland, Oregon which was only a few hundred people at that time, and set up the first paint shop. In 1854 Edwin married Catherine Sadler, who he befriended in Coventry, and they had 2 children, Emily (born April 1, 1855) and Edwin Jr. Shortly after Edwin Jr was born, Edwin Sr died, in August 1857.
