This dressed-stone building, built in 1899 was formerly the Gunnison City Hall. Judging by the signage on the front of the building it was apparently converted to an office building and named Exchange Place in 1981.

Gunnison was named after an Army captain that was killed, along with a number of the men under his command, while they were surveying a potential transcontinental railroad route through the area in 1853. The party was attacked by Pahvant Indians during the conflict known as the 'Walker War'. For many years a rumor persisted that the attack was instigated by Brigham Young to prevent an influx of 'gentiles' (non-Mormons) into the area via a railroad.
