The Savage House is one of only few remaining historic family townhouses in downtown Nashville. It is thought that the townhouse was build circa 1859 for Mary Clayborn. In 1881 the house was purchased by Julian Sax, a prominent Jewish banker from New York purchased the house as a private residence. A few years later he leased it for used as a private Jewish gentleman's club. At this time an addition was added to the rear for use as a ballroom and the basement had Nashville's first bowling alley. In 1898 the house was sold to Dr. Giles Savage, an eye surgeon for use as his home and office. His daughter was also an eye surgeon and also operated from the house. It remained in the Savage family until 1980. In 1980 the house was converted to Savage House Bed and Breakfast upstairs, The Towne House Tea Room on the main floor and The Gas Light Lounge in the ballroom. It served in this role for 25 years and was the scene for several music videos. In 2005 the building was converted back to private house until it was opened as a restaurant as it is today.
