ENThis statue of a sleeping (or dead?) lion up on the slope of Karlsaue park is a memorial dedicated to the Hessian soldiers who lost their lives fighting Napoleon's troops between 1806 and 1815. The figure of a lion was chosen because the lion is the heraldic symbol of Hesse. The statue is made of marble and was created in 1876 by native Kassel sculptor Gustav Kaupert (1819-1897), who also did some work in the USA. He was involved in accomplishing the Capitol sculptures in Washington, D.C.

WikipediaDEDas Löwendenkmal oben am Hang der Karlsaue, auch Hessendenkmal genannt, ist den im Kampf gegen die napoleonischen Truppen 1806-1815 gefallenen hessischen Soldaten gewidmet. Die Figur des schlafenden (oder toten?) Löwen wurde gewählt, weil der Löwe das hessische Wappentier ist. Die Statue ist aus Marmor und wurde 1876 von dem in Kassel geborenen Bildhauer Gustav Kaupert (1819-1897) geschaffen, der auch in den USA künstlerisch tätig war. Er hat unter anderem an den Statuen im Kapitol von Washington mitgewirkt.
