Lake Tarawera is in the Taupo Volcanic Zone which is a 200-km long belt of volcanic activity stretching from the shores of the Pacific Ocean into the heart of New Zealand's North Island. The massive eruption of Mt. Tarawera (visible from this vantage point) in 1886 killed over 100 people and significantly changed the landscape. It is notable that during the largest phase of the eruption, a pyroclastic surge destroyed several villages within a 6 kilometre radius as well as the very famous Pink and White Terraces which, even in the late 1880s was attracting tourists from all over the world to enjoy.
