This majestic triumphal arch, the noble gateway onto the interior of the "Downtown", was planned in the time of the Marquis de Pombal to finish off the northern side of the Praça do Comércio. However, it was only begun in 1862 and finished in 1873.

"The Arco de Triunfo in Praça do Comércio was projected in 1759 and its construction began in the beginning of the Pombalina urbanisation. Construction was stopped during some time and in 1843 a new project was opened to conclude the building. The architecture Veríssimo da Costa won this competition. The Arch at Rua Augusta is the only monument of its kind in Lisbon. On one side, it exhibits the royal arms and on the other side a large clock and it ends with the Glory group crowning the Genius and Valor at its feet which was sculptured by the Frenchman A. Calmels and his disciple Leandro Braga. After some controversy, some Natural History personalities were chosen to figure the Arch: Viriato, Vasco da Gama, Nuno Álvares Pereira and Marquês de Pombal, surrounded by the allegory of the rivers Tagus and Douro which was sculptured Vítor Bastos. The Arch was finally completed in 1873 and has the inscription "Virtutibus maiorum ut sit omnibus documento. P(ecunia). P(ublica). D(icatum)" To the virtues of the Greatest so that it serves as a lesson to all. Dedicated to various publics."
