Samuel was a shoemaker who came here from New York. In 1869 he found his way to Oakwood Lakes which was a trappers paradise. Samuel built this cabin and lived here for the next 5 years.
By 1874 his traplines were declining. So he built a sawmill and he played an important roll in providing lumber for many of houses and area businesses.
After the death of his wife Samuel left here and moved to Yankton Dakota Territory where he married his next wife. They moved back to the cabin and lived there until 1886 at which time they sold the cabin and 1200 acres for $1,800.
