[EN]"Born in Baddeck, John McCurdy was early associated with Alexander Graham Bell. As pilot of the SILVER DART here at Baddeck on 23 February 1909 he became the first person to fly an aeroplane in the British Empire, and in 1910 he was the first Canadian to be issued a pilot's licence. A pioneer of the aircraft industry, he was an officer of the Reid Aircraft Co. (1928) and of Curtis-Reid Aircraft Ltd. (1929-39). McCurdy served as Assistant Director General of Aircraft Production in Canada (1939-47) and was lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia (1947-52). He died in Montreal.

Le 23 fevrier 1909, il pilota Silver Dart, premier avion de l'Empire britannique. En 1910, il devint le premier Canadien a se voir decerner un permis de pilote d'avion. Pionnier de l'industrie aeronautique, il forma la Reid Aircraft Company en 1928 et il fut president de la Curtiss-Reid Aircraft Ltd. de 1929 a 1939. Il fut directeur general adjoint de la production aeronautique canadienne de 1939 a 1947, puis lieutenant-governeur de la Nouvelle-Ecosse de 1947 a 1952. Il mourut a Montreal.
