KZ1, the famous yacht used to challenge for the America's Cup in 1988, is now on display in Auckland's Big Little City near the National Maritime Museum.
It's a 90-foot (27 m) monohull that requires a crew of 30 to 40 to operate. The boat was launched in March 1988 and regarded as the fastest monohull at that time for its size. That confidence prompted New Zealand banker Michael Fay to approach the current Cup holders, San Diego Yacht Club, for a challenge. The SDYC rejected the challenge because they wanted to continue to race in 12 metre yachts. However, Fay took the dispute to the New York State Supreme Court, which declared the challenge valid and instructed the SDYC to meet the challenge on the water.
The race ensued and the SDYC entered a catamaran, Stars & Stripes USA-1. Stars & Stripes was smaller, required fewer crew and was far superior on the water. The best two-out-of-three series was won easily by Dennis Connor's Stars & Stripes USA-1.
More litigation ensued by the Kiwis, stating that using a catamaran against the large NZ1 was not in the spirit of the competition. The courts disagreed and allowed SDYC to retain the America's Cup.
