Sharon Christa McAuliffe was a social studies teacher at Concord High School (Concord, NH) when she was selected by NASA to be the first teacher in space. She made a number of television appearances following her well-publicized selection, and her enthusiasm and pleasant manner led to her taking on somewhat of a celebrity status in the months leading up to the launch.

McAuliffe received pre-flight training during the fall of 1985, and was scheduled to perform various experiments and give several lessons from space once the mission was underway.

On the morning of January 28, 1986, McAuliffe (along with 6 other crew members) boarded the Space Shuttle Challenger at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. 73 seconds into the flight, the Challenger broke apart as the result of a failed o-ring on the right booster rocket. All seven members of the crew were killed.

Honoring her legacy, many educational institutions now bear her name, as does an asteroid, craters on the moon and Venus, and the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center in Concord, New Hampshire.
