A colourful mural completed by the children of Karetu School. Originally done on builder's paper, this permanent location was found in 2011-12.

The theme is inspired by the school's natural environment and the colours are inspired by the artwork of Friedensreich Hundertwasser. All the guidebooks and tourism pamphlets tell travellers to pull off into Kawakawa to see the Hundertwasser Toilets. With this mural and some artistic seating also on the corner, the town is splashed with much needed brightness.

According to the Northern Advocate newspaper/website, the mural was originally painted for a school play, but the sense that it needed to be placed in a more permanent setting was heightened after the mural won a "Wall Worthy" Keep New Zealand Beautiful competition.

It was originally designed and painted by the children with help from Tauranga artist Simone Anderson. Amazingly, in November, 2011, the children recreated the mural on this wall. It measures 12 metres by 2.9 metres.

Upon closer look there is a long environmentally-themed quotation waving through the mural. A shorter message leads in: "Nature provides a free lunch, but only if we control our appetites." Certainly, good words to live by!
