Titled "The Three Sisters" this art work was painted by Australian artist T Penleigh Boyd in watercolour in 1914. The subject remains much the same as our photographic view taken nearly 100 years later from the Lookout at Katoomba in the Blue Mountains. The Three Sisters themselves have hardly aged but no doubt the actual site where the artist set up his easel at the viewing platform has changed vastly into a modern cantilevered affair but still giving the same fantastic view of these famous 'sisters'.

About the Artist: Theodore Penleigh Boyd was born on 15 August 1890 at Penleigh House, Wiltshire, and was educated at Haileybury College and The Hutchins School, Hobart. He studied at the Melbourne National Gallery School (1905-09) and in his final year exhibited at the Victorian Artists' Society. In France he met Edith Susan Gerard Anderson; they were married in Paris on 15 October 1912.
On 28 November 1923 Penleigh Boyd was killed instantly when the car he was driving to Sydney overturned near Warragul; he was buried in Brighton cemetery. In his short career Penleigh Boyd was recognized as one of Australia's finest landscape painters.

About the Scene: Located in the beautiful Blue Mountains of New South Wales, The Three Sisters are a famous rock formation towering high above the Jamison Valley near Katoomba. The Sisters were formed by erosion. Over time, wind and rain gradually clawed away at the sandstone, creating valleys and eventually the Three Sisters peaks formed. Known to the locals as Meehni, Wimlah and Gunneddoo they stand at heights of 912, 918 and 906 metres tall.
Legend has it that three sisters fell in love with three men from neighboring tribes. As marriage between tribes was forbidden the men decided to capture the sisters, creating massive tribal wars. To protect the sisters an elder witch doctor turned them into stone. The elder was killed during the war and the sisters were left to erode as stone for eternity. This legend is falsely claimed to be an Aboriginal Dreamtime legend.
