In 1812 the first industrial manufactory in Missouri Territory (present day Clark County Arkansas) opened when John Hemphill built a simple salt refinery on the banks of a well-known salty creek. He used large iron salt pans to gather creek water and the area's natural forest resources to stoke fires under the pans, boiling the creek water away, leaving behind the salt.
The text of the marker reads as follows:
"No. 026
CLARK COUNTY
FIRST MANUFACTORY IN ARKANSAS
Indians in primeval times, DeSoto in 1541, and pioneers in the 1800s and Confederates during the Civil War obtained salt from the creek and old well here. John Hemphill in 1812 [large blank space] opened one of the first manufactories in Arkansas, a salt refinery.
