The historic marker about the first manufactory in Arkansas explains how this important resource was used by people here for the last several centuries at least. Salt-seekers would fill a big salt pan with salty creek water, then boil the water away leaving the salt in the pan. The marker is next to an old salt pan on the east side of the Clark Co. courthouse lawn at Arkadelphia.

FIRST MANUFACTORY IN ARKANSAS
Indians in primeval times, DeSoto in 1541, and pioneers in the 1800s and Confederates during the Civil War obtained salt from the creek and old well here. John Hemphill in 1812 [large blank space] opened one of the first manufactories in Arkansas, a salt refinery.
