The memorial is a large one forming a bridge head at the end of Victoria Bridge on Trinity Street. It is an English Heritage Grade II* listed building and their web page describes it as follows.

“War memorial, c 1920. F V Blundstone, sculptor. Bronze statuary group on ashlar plinths. Walls which are segmental in plan are terminated on either side of Trinity Street in piers with statues. Square piers with swept abutments, crests of arms and moulded bases carry winged angelic figures supporting dying, battle-clad figures; to the west a soldier and the east a sailor. The segmental walls carry polished granite plaques bearing rolls of honour and are terminated in carved stone lions on square piers.”

In 1950 the right hand wall was extended to honour the war dead from the second world war. The original WW I lion was moved to the WW II memorial.

This lion was carved by masons Messrs. William Kirkpatrick Ltd; and has the following inscription underneath it on its stone base.
