A benchmark found on the surface of the base of the flagpole on Flagstaff Hill, a National Historic Place. The benchmark is a round disk that reads "Lands & Survey Dept., Survey Mark".
The site offers the best waterfront-based view of Paihia harbour.
Flagstaff Hill is a nationally designated heritage place. The plaque on site reads: "On this hill were placed for ceremonial use guns salvaged from the "Brampton" wrecked in the bay in 1823".
Interestingly, although there is no indication of it on site, this location is also of Maori significance. The National Trust register states: "Maiki o Manukaihuia, also known as Flagstaff Hill, is a headland in Paihia which was used as the maiki for the larger Manukaihuia Pa."
State/Territory: North Island NZ
