Often referred to as the “Grand Canyon of the North,” The Hull-Rust-Mahoning Mine was the first open pit mine on the Mesabi Iron Range. Mining began here in 1895 and is still in operation by the Hibbing Taconite Company. The mine measures 3 miles in length, 2 miles in width and is 535’ deep and covers 2,000 acres of land. Production peaked in the 1940’s providing one fourth of the iron ore used in the United States. An observation building and overlook are open to visitors and include interpretive signs, mining equipment, and historical exhibits.
