Elk Creek was renamed Cannon Beach after a cannon from a wrecked US warship war washed up here on the beach. The original cannon is in a local museum; a replica graces an historical marker which reads:
"Cannon Beach"
Named after the cannon washed ashore on this beach from the U.S.S. Sloop of War 'Shark' which was wrecked while attempting to leave the Columbia River Sep't. 10, 1846.
This replica erected by the Cannon Beach Commercial Club Dec. 15, 1952.
