Wilbur Wright was one of the pioneers of aviation, who along with his brother Orville is credited with achieving the first manned powered flight in December 1903 in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Following the success in North Carolina, The Brothers continued to perfect their flying machine and in late 1905 began marketing it to the War Department. Wilbur went on to set a number or early flying records both in American and abroad. Perhaps his best know feat occurred in New York when he entertained a captivate audience of 1 million as he flew around the Statue of Liberty, and followed the Hudson River to Grant's Tomb. In the spring of 1912, Wilbur contracted typhoid fever and died on May 30, 1912. Wilbur Wright is buried in Dayton's Woodland Cemetery, next to his brother Orville, and is his parents Milton and Susan Wright.

Description: Wilbur Wright was born on April 16, 1867 in Millville, Indiana. Unlike his brother Orville, Wilbur excelled in school, and would have graduated from high school if his family had not moved during his senior year. Regardless the studious Wilbur read everything he could about aviation and the brothers succeeded in developing the first manned powered aircraft. On December 17, 1903 the Wright Brothers made the first of their four successful flights of the day at Kill Devil Hills in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Following the success in North Carolina the Brothers returned to Ohio and continued to develop and improve their aircraft and finally in near the end of 1905 the Wright Brother felt comfortable enough with their success to begin marketing their airplanes to the War Department. Wilbur became quite the celebrity both in America and around the world as he set a number flying record in Le Mans, France in 1908 and 1909. In the early spring of 1912, Wilbur contracted typhoid fever and died on May 30, 1912. He is buried in Dayton’s Woodland Cemetery next to his brother Orville and his parents Milton and Susan.
