The first lighted ski slopes in America were at Climax, Colorado. The slopes have long since disappeared into the open pit molybdenum mine that also swallowed up the town.

Cross-country skiing opportunities are unsurpassed and four downhill ski areas are found within 15 miles of here (Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, Ski Cooper and Vail).
