Whaling was never a huge industry in North Carolina. In fact, it was seasonal work for Outer Bankers.

Shackleford Banks was the center of whaling activities in North Carolina. Whales migrating along the coast were just one of the many types of animals preyed upon by coastal fishermen. The people on the Outer Banks harpooned whales from small boats that they also used for mullet fishing, or they waited for whales to beach themselves. The whale fishery was sporadic, and while it continued into the 20th century, it was seasonal and only one of the many activities that helped the "Bankers" make a living.
