Frederick William of Brandenburg (1620 - 1688) was Elector of Brandenburg-Prussia from 1640 - 1688 and until today is commonly known as the Great Elector. He was the last Brandenburg monarch called an Elector, beginning with his son Frederick, his successors adopted the title of a King. The statue is situated on the premises of Sparrenburg castle, a place the Great Elector was quite fond of. He visited it frequently and two of his children were born here. The statue was a gift to the city of Bielefeld by one of his descendants, Emperor William II. It was unveiled in a ceremonial act in presence of the Emperor on August 6, 1900. The words Domine fac me scire viam quam ambulem on the front side of the plinth are the motto the Great Elector chose for himself when he was a 14-year old Prince and are Latin for Psalm 143,8: Lord, cause me to know the way wherein I should walk.
