Without any notable river, Bielefeld lacks the kind of bridges appropriate for love padlocks. After all, you wouldn't want to throw the key down on a motorway, would you? But the Bielefeld lovers have found a substitute: the railings of the lookout platforms at Sparrenburg castle, which is a romantic place to go anyway, especially as night falls and you can watch the lights go on down in the city. Since only those poles running up to the top railing are suited for the locks, the padlocks aren't clumped together in large quantities the way you usually find them, but are distributed in small numbers all along the railing. Photos and coordinates were taken at the Marienrondell, but you can find them all over the place.
Sparrenburg castle is a medieval fortification on a hill overlooking the town and Bielefeld's most prominent landmark. The grounds are open to the public from 9:00 - 22:00 hrs every day April to October and 10:00 - 20:00 hrs every day November to March, access is free.

In Bielefeld gibt es keinen nennenswerten Fluss und demzufolge auch keine Brücke, die für Liebesschlösser wirklich geeignet wäre. Man möchte den Schlüssel ja nicht auf eine Schnellstraße hinunterwerfen, oder? Aber die Liebenden in Bielefeld haben einen Ersatz gefunden: das Geländer an den Aussichtspunkten auf dem Sparrenburggelände; ohnehin ein romantischer Ort, besonders wenn es Nacht wird und man zugucken kann, wie unten in der Stadt die Lichter angehen. Da sich nur die bis zum oberen Handlauf durchgehenden Gitterstäbe eignen, findet man die Liebesschlösser nicht massiv zusammengedrängt, wie es andernorts oft üblich ist, sondern in kleinen Portionen entlang des gesamten Geländers verteilt. Die Koordinaten weisen auf das Marienrondell, wo auch die Fotos entstanden sind, aber man findet die Schlösser überall entlang der Aussichtspunkte.
Die Sparrenburg ist eine mittelalterliche Befestigungsanlage auf einem Hügel, von wo man die ganze Stadt überblicken kann, und ist Bielefelds berühmtestes Wahrzeichen. Das Gelände ist von April bis Oktober täglich 9:00 - 22:00 h und von November bis März täglich 10:00 - 20:00 h geöffnet, der Eintritt ist kostenlos.
