The dam originally cost $2.4M and was the largest dam west of Niagara Falls. Initially, much of its power was used for the street cars of Milwaukee.

Several dams have been at or near this location since 1850. Construction of this dam commenced in 1906 and finished in 1909. Continual problems that forced extensive repairs in 1935. The hydroelectric plant produces electricity for Wisconsin Power and Light Co., a subsidiary of Alliant Energy.
