People that discover these sculptures attached to the street lights on the West Galer Street Flyover frequently wonder what they represent. Are they tacos? Are they Venus Fly Traps? In truth, they are neither of these things. They are Sail Light Armatures, created in 2002 by artist Vickie Scuri.
According to Seattle's Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs,
"The arching bent steel pipe of the Sail Armatures, which are lit from below and visible both day and night, "stand out against the sky and designate key places along the bridge." Taken together these white pipes effectively give the flyover an identity all its own while encouraging and inspiring metaphoric explorations.
The three-dimensional symmetry and location-specific relevance of these elements highlights the bridge, subtly enhancing the user's experience through art."
