This cemetery was founded in 1899 and extended in 1913. It is located at the railway line in the north of Riehen close to the German border. It is exclusively dedicated to residents of Riehen or citizens of Riehen living in the canton Basel-Stadt who can be buried here. Other persons have to file an application to prove their connection to Riehen and pay a fee.
Only about 40% of the residents choose this cemetery; Switzerland's largest cemetery - "Friedhof am Hörnli" - is also located on the soil of Riehen and more popular because it is closer to the residential zones of the majority.
The cemetery has currently about 1900 graves.
