This 'You Are Here' is part of an interesting information display at the end of Windabout Way on the outskirts of Esperance. The shelter is about five-minutes drive from the centre of Esperance.
This portion of the Lake Warden Wetland System is known as Windabout Lakes. Lake Warden proper, with an open lake area of almost six square kilometres and a shoreline of nine kilometres, is two kilometres west of this shelter. Windabout Lakes, with an open lake area of only three square kilometres, has a shoreline of about ten kilometres, due to the 'Windabout' nature of it's shoreline.
The first information sign is titled 'Welcome to the Lake Warden Wetland System'. It details some of the history of the area, and has a map which shows the eastern portion of the wetland system and the Kepwari Wetland Walk Trail as well as the Kepwari Wetland Canoe Trail. The centre of that sign features a piece of indigenous art by a direct descendant of the Bullenbuk People, the traditional owners of the Esperance Region.
The Kepwari Wetland Walk Trail is a 3.6 kilometre long, one-way interpretative trail and is designed to be a learning experience. Panels and information displays help you discover why these wetlands are important, why they are under threat and how you can help protect them for future generations. The Kepwari Wetland canoe trail starts near the walk trail and allows canoeists to paddle through Woody Lake to Wheatfield Lake, finishing at another information shelter at the eastern end of the walk trail. The Kepwari Wetland Canoe Trail is on the WanderingAus 'Round Tuit' list.
The second information sign is titled 'Wetlands for the future'. It explains about the habitat and wildlife of the region.
