The Castle of Esponellà, which was erected in 1381 as a border castle, has its origin in a watchtower, build during the 11th century.
At the end of the 14th century, King Pedro IV of Aragon sold the place to Guillem de Colteller and authorized him to construct a castle occupying, more or less, the current territory of the municipality. Within the area of the castle was built a chapel dedicated to the Virgen de la Esperanza.
