La principauté de Salm forme, à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, un territoire recentré, vestige d'une seigneurie autrefois plus vaste nommée Salm-en-Vosges. Elle succède à un territoire historique plus vaste séparée en 1598 par un long indivis ; le comté de Salm du comte Jean IX, devenu, après 1600 par le mariage de sa fille Christine, partie du duché de Lorraine d'une part, et une première principauté de Salm qui désigne commodément l'autre moitié du comté de Salm attribuée au rhingrave Frédéric, comte sauvage du Rhin élevé en 1602 au statut de prince d'Empire d'autre part.
La Principauté de Salm n'existe effectivement qu'entre 1751 et 1793. Elle est souveraine bien que les Français disposent d'un droit de libre passage. Après l'annexion ratifiée le 2 mars 1793, la Convention sépare l'ancien territoire princier en deux cantons des Vosges, le canton de Senones et le canton de La Broque, ce dernier canton complété ultérieurement par l'apport d'autres communes du val de Bruche
The Principality of Salm form at the end of the eighteenth century, a territory refocused vestige of a once larger lordship named Salm-in-Vosges. It follows a broader historical territory separated in 1598 by a long undivided; County Salm Count Jean IX, became, after 1600, by the marriage of his daughter Christine, part of the duchy of Lorraine on the one hand, and a first principality of Salm means that the other half conveniently county Salm rhingrave attributed to Frederick, Earl wild of the Rhine in 1602 raised the status of prince of the Empire on the other.
The Principality of Salm actually there between 1751 and 1793. It is paramount that the French have a right of free passage. After the annexation ratified on 2 March 1793, the Convention between the former princely territory into two cantons des Vosges Senones Township and the Township of La Broque, the latter canton later supplemented by input from other towns of the valley Bruche
